A friend recently asked me: “If you could choose between Donald Trump and a super-intelligent Facebook algorithm being president, who would you choose?” It’s not an easy question to answer. When you strip away the spiritual and supernatural elements of evil, you find something that smells like politics but acts like branding. If you look at an Daesh tumblr, it becomes clear: evil is a branding problem. Cultural consumption and political identity are increasingly interchangeable, but are political consumers able to see this shift? Or is everyone flying blind, stuck in their own personal filter bubble?
